In case you can’t tell by the title of this post, this will have absolutely nothing to do with Richard Armitage or fun fangirling stuff. I make a point of avoiding political stuff and even religious stuff here, because there is no way that a bunch of fangirls are all going to agree on such issues. But there is one issue in the news right now, although it isn’t getting the kind of coverage it should, that is dear to my heart, and frankly, on some level makes me ashamed to be an American.
There is a German family, the Romeike family, who came to the United States of America seeking asylum because the German government doesn’t allow its citizens to home school their children. This family, for religious reasons, chose to do so anyway. The government sent police into their home, forcibly removed the children and took them to school. Then when the family found a way to prevent this from occurring again they were fined $10,000.
Recognizing that they would go bankrupt if they stuck to their convictions, they sought and were granted asylum in the United States. The judge who granted them asylum recognized that the German government was trying to suppress a segment of society, those who wish to educate their children in a manner of their own choosing.
But now ICE, the DOJ, and even the President are seeking to send this family back to Germany–saying that a law that bans homeschooling does not violate parents’ fundamental right to educate their children as they see fit. I include the President here, because the White House has blatantly ignored a petition that has surpassed the required number of signatures to be brought to his attention, asking that he intervene on behalf of this family.
The truth of the matter is, he doesn’t want to intervene. Our government is moving daily in a direction where they want to control as many aspects of our daily lives as they can. Including infringing on the rights of parents to make decisions for their children. This issue is not about one family. It may have horrific results for them, but the issue is much larger. The government has declared that home schooling is a privilege granted by the government, not a right. ICE made this clear when they argued in their appeal that the United States government has the right to prohibit home schooling.
While many politicians are busy fighting for the rights of those who have flouted our nations laws simply by being here, this family, who went through all the proper channels, are being persecuted by our government. All so that the government can make a resounding declaration that they know better what is right for your children than you do.
I’m truly sickened by this. Our government needs to get its priorities straight. Namely, protecting those who should be protected, not raking them over the coals while we the people sit back and let it happen.
Shame on us.
This is no longer the land of the free, and anyone who believes otherwise is deluding themselves.
